Welcome Nathaniel Deutsch

The Center for Jewish Studies is pleased to announce that Dr. Nathaniel Deutsch has joined the ranks of Jewish Studies at UC Santa Cruz!



Dr. Deutsch was recently appointed as a Professor of Literature and History and Co-Director of the Center for Jewish Studies and comes to UC from Swarthmore College, where he was instrumental in building that institution's Jewish Studies community as a professor in the Department of Religion. He was also a driving force behind the establishment of a Beit Midrash or House of Study, part of Swarthmore's Library and a center for the study of classical Jewish texts.

Professor Deutsch's research interests include: the Hebrew Bible; rabbinic literature; Jewish mysticism; Hasidism; Eastern European Jewish life; ethnography.

We are greatly pleased to have Dr. Deutsch join the Jewish Studies community here at UC and hope you'll take the time to introduce yourselves and welcome him as well.
